Philosophy and folksonomy

A post on David Weinberger’s blog turned me on to an article by Elaine Peterson called “Beneath the Metadata” that was published in the November 2006 D-Lib magazine.

I took note for two reasons. First, Peterson works on my campus at the Renne Library. This means that, even though the article is two years old, I might be able to pull a news service story about the subject out of her. Yay for keeping busy. Second, this subject interests me. My thesis was in part on whether authors really carry the same authority they once did, and folksonomies and professional cataloging systems take different views on the author’s intent and authority.

I’ll be back to write on this subject at greater length, possibly after work tonight.
