Baby @

The Associated Press reported today that a Chinese couple filed paperwork to name their baby “@.” That is, they wanted their baby’s name to be the at-sign (which has no proper name in English).

The couple reasoned that the character is so commonly used in the world these days that it would make a fitting name for their child. Also, the English pronunciation “at” for the symbol sounds like the Chinese phrase “love him,” which the parents also thought was appropriate.

There was no word from the Chinese government whether the name was approved.
