Hamlet DVD

I got a surprise in my inbox this morning. As it turns out, an Amazon notification I set up years ago paid off. I asked the site to notify me when Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet was released on DVD, and by gum, it’s available for preorder. The film will actually be released in mid-August.

For those of you not in the know, Branagh’s film is the only cinematic production of the whole play. Most productions, like the Mel Gibson version, are extensively edited for time. Not only does Branagh keep the whole play, but he also incorporates a slew of British stage talent and Hollywood actors in bit parts. It’s a lush, extravagant, larger than life film that was, for years and years, trapped on VHS.

I can’t wait to pop it in and watch it in 5.1 surround sound!
